Marendaz Family Connections
Several
generations of the Marendaz family farmed in Glamorgan, but clearly the
name has origins elsewhere. The first member of the family to appear in
Glamorgan - David Emmanuel Marendaz - is
believed to have arrived in Britain in the 1700's from the area of
Lausanne in Switzerland, where the Marendaz family, seemingly of
Portuguese origins, had been established
since the 13th century. Various accounts and legends relating to the
family and its origins have been been brought together by James
Loveluck on his Loveluck Family History Website.
There
are several connections between the Marendaz family and our direct
ancestors. One Marendaz who should have special mention was connected
to our ancestors by marriage - twice! David Emmanuel Marendaz,
eldest son of the first Marendaz in Glamorgan, of the same name, first
married Catherine Powell, daughter of William Powell of Eglwys Nynydd
(brother of our great great great grandfather), and following her
death, David married Catherine Jones, daughter of Thomas Jones and Mary
Jane Lewis, our great great great grandparents.
