The
county of Lancashire played only a brief part in the Family History -
but an important one. It was in Lancashire - specifically in Manchester
- that my maternal grandparents - Thomas Brough and Anne Prentice - met
and married. But neither of them had their roots in the county.
Anne and her sister
Fanny were born in Manchester, but their parents, two brothers,
and elder sister had arrived there from Priors Marston,
Warwickshire in the late
1870's. Thomas, born in Cockermouth, Cumberland, came to work in
Manchester in his late teens, living at first with his elder brother
and his wife who had already made the move from Cumberland to
South Manchester. Shortly after their marriage in 1909, Thomas and Anne
moved to Cheadle Heath in Cheshire, and the Lancashire period of
the Family History was over - at least for our direct ancestral
line.
But Anne's two
sisters and one of her brothers married into Lancashire families and
brought up families in the county, and their descendants live their to
this day. I am grateful to my cousin Leonard Davenport of Manchester,
grandson of Anne's sister Fanny, for providing much of the information
in the database relating to the Lancashire families.
