Grave(s) Family History
Events relating to most branches of the GRAVE/GRAVES family
appeared in the various official records with what seems like a totally
arbitrary choice of surname spelling - GRAVE or GRAVES. To avoid families being
split in the records, and to ease search and selection within the database, I
have been obliged to settle for one or the other and have chosen GRAVE for them.
Even though some individuals and families seem to have used GRAVES fairly
consistently in birth and marriage registration, for consistency in the database, I have nevertheless used GRAVE for them as for all their relatives.
Our link to the GRAVE family is as a result of the marriage of my great
grandfather John BROUGH to Tamar GRAVE, one of thirteen
children of Stephen GRAVE, a Cumberland farmer, himself descended
from a long line of Cumberland farmers - the GRAVEs and the
THORNTHWAITEs. A number of descendants of the various branches of these
GRAVE and THORTHWAITE families are also actively researching their
family history and the results of their research, which they have
shared with me, are reflected in the database on this website.
In the future I plan to include much more here on the history of the GRAVE family.
